Designing Our Den

When designing our den, we wanted to create a space that felt intimate and warm, something that would encourage people to linger. As a room right off the kitchen, it’s the perfect spot to gather with friends before or after a meal, and we wanted the design to reflect that. The inspiration came from our years living in New York City, where we spent countless evenings in cozy, dimly lit restaurants. There’s something about those small, lush spaces that always made us feel at home, and we wanted to bring that same warmth and charm into our own space here.

The focal point of the den is the fireplace, which immediately sets a cozy tone. We paired it with a beautiful wood built-in that we couldn’t bear to paint over. For us, painting over natural wood feels sacrilegious—it has so much character and history. The wood’s rich, warm tones set the foundation for the room's palette, which we built on with lush textures like velvet and leather. These materials not only evoke that classic, timeless feel but also give the room a sense of luxury without being too formal.

Lighting was another crucial element. In our favorite NYC spots, the lighting is always low and moody, creating a sense of intimacy. We replicated that with soft, indirect lighting—think table lamps and sconces instead of overhead lights. This creates a warm glow that makes the space feel inviting, like you’re tucked away in a private nook. It’s a room where you can lose track of time, just enjoying good company and conversation.

A key element of the den’s design was the furniture, which helped tie the whole room together. We were fortunate to inherit some truly stunning pieces that not only suited the vibe we were going for but also added a deep personal connection to the space. One of the most important pieces is a vibrant oil painting that we inherited from my French grandmother. It’s full of rich jewel tones, and we knew from the start that it had to be the centerpiece of the room. The bold colors in the painting create a striking contrast against the warm wood tones and deep maroon painted walls, and add a burst of energy that enlivens the cozy atmosphere.

In the end, we wanted this space to feel like a retreat within our home, a place where we could entertain but also relax. By combining our love for the cozy, timeless appeal of those New York restaurants with the organic beauty of the materials already present in the room, we’ve created a den that feels both personal and inviting, a space where everyone feels at home.

Stay tuned for the final reveal!
